Mixed emotions at NSW Open
Written by Bruce Young

It was with perhaps mixed emotions that Peter finished in a share of 4th position at the NSW Open at Stonecutter's Ridge in the west of Sydney.

Delight in as much it was his best performance in a tournament for several years but some level of frustration that he let an opportunity to finish much closer slip from his grasp.

Peter headed into the final round four shots behind the eventual winner Ben Eccles, the amateur from Geelong. Peter made a horror start, dropping three shots early but fought his way back and when he arrived at the par five last a birdie there might well have seen him finish in outright second.

Unfortunately, however, Peter bogeyed the last and instead of finishing alone in second position he finished in a five way tie for 4th.

Still it was a week that had followed two cuts made in the two events in Western Australia earlier in November.

Peter now heads to Huntingdale in Melbourne, the scene of his two Australian Masters Championship wins, and his encouraging form of late gives him reason to believe he could again do well.

Peter has made a successful return to tournament golf after so long away with injury, making the cut in both PGA Tour of Australasia events he has played in Western Australia and a good start to this week's NSW Open.

Like half the field at the Stonecutter's Ridge layout in Sydney's west, Peter is required to complete round two of the NSW Open on Saturday morning but opened with a round of 68 to be well enough placed before his second round gets under way.

"I am happy with the way things have gone and generally happy with my game and am looking forward to the next few weeks to try and build continuity but considering how long I have had away from the game I am pleased with the way things are going so far," said Peter.

Peter will play next week's Australian Masters which is back at Huntingdale this year where he has won the event on two previous occasions.

Then it is on to the Australian Open at The Australian Golf Club where Peter won the Australian Open in 2004 and finally he will play the Australian PGA Championship which he has won on three previous occasions although this time it is at the revamped RACV Royal Pines.

Peter plays well in New Zealand

Peter finished tied for 33rd at the BMW NZ Open in Queenstown to finish his summer of golf in Australasia, a final round of 68 and a final nine of 33 at the Hills seeing the season off in good style.

It has been a frutrating run for Peter this summer but an 11th place in Auckland the previous week and a solid week in Queenstown continues to provide hope for the year ahead.

Work on his chipping, an area of his game that has given much grief in recent times, after the Victorian PGA Championship, appears to have yielded some results.

It is expected Peter might play some OneAsia events and is still considering the possibility of playing some events in the US later in the year, taking advantage of the exemptions for players approaching the Champions Tour.
Peter makes weekend despite late scare

Peter is through to the weekend at the BMW New Zealand Open Championship recovering from an average opening round of 71 at Millbrook Resort yesterday to add a second round of 68 at the Hills. He is in 33rd position and seven shots from the lead.

After an early bogey in round one, Peter was soon into stride with four consecutive birdies but a late double bogey caused concern before birdies at his 16th and 17th holes saw him through.

Peter will play at 9.52 tomorrow with New Zealander Mark Brown and Victorian Jack Wilson

Peter's game building to better things

With the benefit of continuity Peter's game is building to better things following his 11th place finish at the NZPGA Championship in Auckland last week.

This week he heads to the idyllic Queenstown in New Zealand's tourism playground for the BMW New Zealand Open Championship where he plays the pro am formatted event for the first time.

The last time Peter played the Hills Golf Course was just before his surgery for hip and knee issues back in 2010 so it has been quite a journey since. The signs are positive however having put together his best finish anywhere in more than eighteen months last week.

Some time spent after the Vicotrian PGA working on his chipping with Victorian coach Craig Hanson seems to have helped in an area of his game that has been of concernf or some time.
