City Golf Club Toowoomba - home of this week's QLD PGA

Peter is competing in several events in Australia ahead of a PGA Tour Champions campaign in the next month or so.

Although not exempt for Champions Tour events, after missing out at Q-School late last year, he does have the right to attempt pre-qualifying for events on the lucrative tour and he will head to the USA in order to do so.

Following a missed cut at the Vic Open Peter then finished 34th at the World Supr 6 Perth event, narrowly missing out on making it to the top 24 who advanced to the match-play phase of the uniquely formated event.

This week Peter plays the Queensland PGA Championship at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba where he has made a good start to his opening round at the City Golf Club.

Options for 2019 being considered by Peter

A week after a frustrating attempt to gain US Champions Tour status Peter is considering his options for 2019 which are likely to include attempts at Pre-Qualifying for events on the Champions Tour.

Peter finished 14th at the Final Stage after playing well for much of the week apart from a horror finish to his second round when just one from the lead through nine holes that day.

Only the leading five players secured fully exempt status for the lucrative over-fifties tour and while eligible to at least attempt qualifying for each and every event where Tuesday qualifying is available Peter is considering just which events he will target in the New Year.

"I am likely to play several events here in Australia before heading to the US in April but everything is still up in the air at present," said Peter this week.

"I felt I played well for so much of the four days in Tampa so it was disappointing to have missed so narrowly in the final analysis.

"While there are early season events, the PGA Tour Champions really begins to build momentum in May and it might be that I leave it till then to head across to the US although I am still contemplating just which is the best way to tackle things."

Peter has finished tied for 13th at Champions Tour qualifying in Tampa in Florida, his final round of 68 improving his 12 places to 13th and although he does not earn exempt status on the 2019 Champions Tour he will have the right to Monday qualify in events if he so chooses.

Peter's week was brought undone by a triple bogey the the 10th hole of his second round when just one shot from the lead and perhaps shaken by the incident he dropped three shots later in that round of 74 after being right in the hunt for one of the top five cards.

When he then added another 74 in round three his prospects of even being eligible to attempt Monday qualifying in events next season appeared in jeapordy but he performed well with a final round of 3 under par.

Peter has left for Tampa in the USA where qualifying for the 2019 Champions Tour begins on Tuesday.

A solid week at the Australian Open was followed by a fine round of 67 to win a Legends Tour pro Am at the Australian Golf Club earlier this week and he heads to the USA with his game in solid shape for a tilt at one of golf's more exacting examinations.

Only five of the 78 players who tee it up on Tuesday will earn the right to play the Champions Tour with exemption in 2019, Peter joined by fellow Australians, Craig Parry, Stephen Leaney and Gavin Coles as they chase the right to play for the riches of golf over 50.

Mixed fortunes on Australian Open Sunday for Peter

Peter has finished in 50th place at the Emirates Australian Open after a final round of 74.

It could have been signficantly worse but for a strong finish on Sunday after dropping four shots early in his round.

Peter birdied the 9th, 10th and 17th holes, the only blemish on the way to the clubhouse coming when he dropped a shot at the par 3 15th.

After what had been a solid start to the week with rounds of 72 and 71 to get things underway, Peter was going well enough on Saturday until a ball in the water at the 14th cost him a double bogey. He recovered with a birdie at the 16th for a round of 73.

His Sunday 74 was a game of two halves really but importantly he leaves for Tampa in Florida later this week feeling better about the way he finished off his round.

Peter tees it up on Tuesday week (27th) at the Final Stage of Qualifying for the 2019 Champions Tour in which essentially only five places are available for the 2019 Champions Tour season.
