Great debut but perhaps a case of what might have been

It was a brilliant debut in senior golf for Peter but it was perhaps a day of what might have been at the Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl in Wales where he eventually tied for 3rd.

After beginning the final round five shots behind leader, Bernhard Langer, Peter fought all day with a superb display of driving and iron play but the putting, which had been so good for so much of the week deserted him on day four and it would be a three putt at the last that would be the final blow.

Peter arrived at the last tied for second with playing partner Cory Pavin, Billy Andrade and Fred Couples, the latter pair in the clubhouse.

The last was a reachable par five and Peter hit a fine drive and then found the green with his second some 25 feet short of the hole. Pavin who could not reach the green after finding the rought with his tee shot hit a poor pitch 25 feet short of the hole.

He putted first and holed for an unlikely birdie and moved into second outright before Peter attempted his putt for eagle which would have given him second outright on his own.

The putt was misread or mishit and he finished 4 feet short and right.  Peter would have been standing in Langer's line and so waited while the champion finished out and then proceeded to miss his short putt for birdie and a share of second.

Peter would tie for third with Couples and Andrade.

To add insult to injury Peter would later find out he was not in next week's Scottish Open after initially being told a good finish this week would get him in after missing out on getting his entry in on time originally.

Great start to Senior career for Peter

Peter is tied for 7th and just three shots from the lead at the Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl in Southern Wales.

As was the case on day one, Peter started slowly with two early bogeys but steaded the ship and was well positioned with just a few holes to play but bogeys at the 15th and 17th holes cost him a chance of potentially leading the event into the weekend.

It has been however a very encouraging start to his career in the over fifties and in a share of 7th place and close to the lead anyway he has a chance over the weekend to improve further.

"I was just holding on the whole day pretty much I think," said Peter. "It was really difficult to get the ball close, even if you did get it on the greens. Of course with the wind, the rain squalls, made it pretty difficult to hole some putts. I was hoping to get it in a couple over.

"I was a couple over with probably four to go, and 15, 16, 17 are probably the toughest, the tougher holes on the course, if you stay away from 1, 2, 3, 4. I would have loved to have just get through that with one bogey maybe and then birdie the last. But it didn't happen.

"If the wind stays up, it's still going to be a reasonable score I think. It's playing pretty tough. As long as you can stay somewhere around par I think coming into Sunday, you'll be in with a shout."

Peter awaits Senior Tour debut

Peter has arrived in Wales for this week's Senior Open Championship and has already fallen in love with the Royal Porthcawl layout where this week he will make his debut in over fifties golf.

Peter spent last week at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas preparing for this week but on arrival and after his first look at Royal Porthcawl he was impressed by what he saw.

"What a great golf course," said Peter today. The weather might not be so good however as it is predcited to be bad so it is going to be quite a test.

Peter is happy enough with the manner in which he is playing having put together several low rounds on the Web.Com Tour in recent weeks.

The event is jointly sanctioned between the European Senior and Champions Tour.

Peter plays his opening two rounds with Carl Mason and Steen Tinning
